Natural Treatment for Adrenal Fatigue

Whilst Adrenal fatigue is not currently recognised as a medical diagnosis, it is often used to define chronic exhaustion or even adrenal insufficiency. Under stress the adrenal glands produce the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline and cortisol which activate the body’s ‘fight or flight’ mode.

Whilst cortisol is essential for everyday functioning, the body is not designed to suffer under long periods of stress. During intense and long periods of stress the adrenal glands become exhausted, producing less of these hormones.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are exhaustion, fatigue, brain fogginess, lethargy, an inability to fall asleep at night, body aches, nervousness, salt cravings, and digestive issues.

Whilst it’s important to rule out any other conditions that may cause these symptoms, adrenal exhaustion can be treated with rest, good nutrition and yoga therapy to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

During sleep, hormones for growth and repair are secreted from the pituitary gland. Quality sleep is important for recovering from long periods of stress. However unless we de-activate the' fight or flight' part of the nervous system as we settle for rest, the body will continue to function from this more agitated state.

Yoga therapy uses a variety of techniques to help ‘turn off’ the adrenal glands to prepare the body for quality sleep and recovery.
Yoga poses can help slow the heart rate and calm the nervous system.
Legs up the wall pose for example reduces nerve input to the adrenal glands, lowering stress hormones.

Meditations and breathing practices can help stimulate the pituitary gland, activating deep rest and recovery for the whole body.

Meditations also equip the individual with better coping skills to manage, or even detach from the daily stress they may be experiencing.
